Technical Tuesday – 14 May 2019 – Wireless Assessment Platform Design: Three Approaches by Jeff Kuhn of MarkPoint Technologies

Ongoing size, weight, and power improvements have made relatively small wireless traffic analysis tools both practical and comparatively inexpensive. The sort of wireless situational awareness that required a cart and at least $20K of equipment just a few years ago can now be developed for less than $5K and held in one hand. This presentation considers three very different approaches to the design of that type of system. The first uses a small Software Defined Radio (SDR) based on a low-cost zero IF transceiver chip such as the Analog Devices AD9371. The second approach involves a more traditional and somewhat more expensive superheterodyne receiver. The third approach considered here is a distributed cloud-based design with in-place sensors that are Internet-connected to a remote analysis and presentation server.

Mr. Kuhn has 30 years of Intelligence Community and commercial experience with networked system vulnerability analysis and security engineering. He began his career in the early 1980s at the R&D division of the National Computer Security Center before spending more than a decade performing Computer Network Operations engineering as a Department of Defense civilian. Mr. Kuhn then spent five years with GTE supporting early CALEA lawful intercept efforts and other telecommunications security engineering programs. After another decade providing technical direction and key engineering for two small business Cyber Network Operations practices, he is now Vice President of Security Engineering at MarkPoint, strongly focused on networked system security and practical cyber operations.
